Introduction to optical time domain reflectometry

Recently, there was an attack on Deutsche Bahn AG's fiber optic network. Such effects of the political world situation remind us how important the monitoring of the ever-growing fiber networks is for securing critical infrastructure. Optical time-domain reflectometry plays a central role here, whereby very short pulse durations must be displayed with very high resolution over a large measurement range using the smallest possible sampling intervals for efficient remote monitoring. In addition to high-performance ADCs, particularly fast TDCs come into play here.

You can read about how OTDR works and what it is all about in our article on the subject.
